Handicapping the ponies can be an exercise in both inductive and deductive reasoning, however, logic rarely is the key to picking a 50-1 horse out of a 12 horse field. So as a tribute to the person who got me started in this great sport, with her system of, “Pick the gray, black, or best named horse”, this article is about names. Belmont Stakes Field Analysis
The Final Jewel in the Triple Crown Series lands a rather unique field for the race that has been called “The Test of Champions”. The uniqueness of this field has more to do with who isn’t running than any Belmont Stakes in recent history. There is no Derby winner, no Preakness winner, no Eskendereya, and nobody that puts the fear into the field’s trainers. That being said, we do have an edition of The Belmont Stakes that actually offers horses bred to run 12 furlongs. There are 7 horses entered that have Tomilinson Ratings of greater than 300 for the distance. That is a rarity in American Horse Racing! When the morning lines are set tomorrow, I will be curious of two things. “Who is the Favorite?” and “What are the odds going to look like?” Past Performances are listed on www.belmontstakes.com website for free. Here is my Analysis of the runners. Selections for the Belmont Stakes will be posted on Friday along with the Analysis for all of the Stakes action at Belmont Park for Saturday. These will be listed in addition to my weekly Hollywood Park picks and analysis of their Stakes action as well.

There are a whole host of sites that bash Andrew Beyer for his speed figures. This site is not one of them despite our recent efforts improve the speed figure equation. Andrew Beyer, with his Beyer Speed Figures, should be looked at as nothing less than an innovator in the Handicapping Game. Mull over that last statement for second…. Hollywood Park Selections: May 22, 2010
Our Weekly Handicap of our Favorite California Track! We Handicap without knowledge of the odds in order not to select horses based on “value”. There is no value in a loser. We choose 3 horses per race and define our terms as follows…
Logical: A probable short priced horse that stands out on paper
Reasonable: That damn horse that I don’t want to stand against because it often beats me.
Long: A horse that isn’t eyepopping on paper but looks like it could outrun its probable odds.
Hollywood Park Race 1
Logical: #5 Liberian Freighter
Reasonable: #2 Enriched
Long: #1 Asperity

Our Analysis covers most races for a given race card. Obviously, it is tough to have a strong opinion on all races on a given card. Therefore, we narrow each race down to what we feel the three best horses in a given race are. We handicap before odds are available so not to skew our selections based on “value”.
Our definitions are as follows…..
Logical: A horse (usually at short odds) that seems to be a standout on paper.
Reasonable: A horse that may not really standout on paper but would be no surprise if it won the race.
Long: A horse that should be at higher odds than Logical or Reasonable but we feel should run a good race in these conditions. Hollywood Park and Woodbine will be available on Friday! Good Luck! Continue reading FREE Picks for Arlington Park – 5/22/2010

The 3rd Saturday in May leaves only one horse that can be considered for the greatest achievement in sports. Is this the year for the fist Triple Crown winner since Affirmed did it three decades ago? My gut is telling me it is possible but not likely. The reason for my doubt is because we had a few situations in the Derby that helped the winner on that day. The pace was very fast leaving the door open for a steady runner with enough tactical speed to make post position irrelevant. The 20 horses made the winner sit off pace more than usual, and you can’t forget the mud bog that benefits horses born with the right tires. So though, I have always been high on Super Saver, I will not be surprised if he takes a step backward from his last race. So who can beat him? That remains to be seen. However, we are going to give you a horse by horse breakdown of the field for the second jewel of the Triple Crown. In preparation for June Triple Crown despair this week, our track of the week is Belmont Park. It cannot be understated how a competent jockey is the key to winning at this track. I saw a MSW a few days ago and the horse that finished 5th was traveling the best going into the turn, however, the Jockey forgot how large the turn at Belmont Park is and prematurely started riding the horse which inevitably cost the horse the race. Before we continue to selections I must herald a WARNING: Playing these races today can be hazardous to your pocketbook, or, if lucky, expand your pocket book. Why the warning? What we have is a card that resembles old Penn National rather than, “Big Boy Horse Racing”. Continue reading FREE Picks For Belmont Park – 5/8/2010
